Many women know first-hand what is it like to experience incontinence – whether this is during pregnancy, recovering after having your baby or it is still affecting you now. The amount of incontinence varies from person to person.
Bowel dysfunction can be painful, inconvenient and often a source of distress. It commonly presents after delivering a baby due to the trauma on the tissues in the area of the bowel, and in particular if you have tearing of your pelvic floor muscles.
Physiotherapy can help you cope with the changes your body experiences during pregnancy. You can learn how to use your body well and have the confidence in your ability to manage your pregnancy, your labour and the birth itself.
A full back, pelvis and posture assessment is carried out on all postnatal patients. Your physiotherapist can help guide you through what is a safe and sufficient exercise plan as physical activity is recommended to strengthen weakened muscles.
“My bladder problems controlled my life for so many years and I had given up that anything could be done. But since I have attended for physio treatment, things have improved beyond belief. I can lead a normal life again. It’s not an easy process, but Lorraine was very patient and explained things in a way that I understood. Her encouragement and instruction made all the difference.”
“I was so concerned at 25 weeks of pregnancy, as I had severe pain in my pelvis, so much so that I could hardly walk or move. But with Lorraine’s help, my pain lessened over a few weeks and then it went away completely, letting my enjoy the last weeks of my pregnancy, painfree! I would recommend her to anyone in a similar situation.”
“I can now go out for the day and not worry about whether there will be a toilet nearby, I have a new lease of life. I have confidence in my ability to ‘hold on’ since I strengthened my pelvic floor muscles.”
